Cursor alternatives 2026: switch IDE, switch to a terminal agent, or add Chinese models
As of 2026-11-05, Cursor alternatives fall into three types: another IDE (Trae, Devin Desktop, the new name for Windsurf, or VS Code with an extension), a terminal agent (Claude Code, Codex CLI, OpenCode), or a terminal tool wired to Chinese models (Qwen Code, Kimi Code CLI). Tools that accept your own API key can use the same QCode key when you follow the setup pages in the QCode docs.

Switch models on the same endpoint and measure the cost per token yourself; check /models for callable models.
- Billed per token — live rates on /models
- Pay by card (Visa / Mastercard), Apple Pay, Google Pay or crypto
- Self-service: top up and activate instantly
Four takeaways
Switch IDE
Trae's official docs let you add a custom model from an API format, a request URL and a model ID. Devin Desktop is the new name for Windsurf, and connecting your own API goes through ACP-hosted agents. VS Code's Language Models editor accepts a custom endpoint.
Switch to a terminal agent
Claude Code, Codex CLI and OpenCode read code, edit files and run commands in the terminal. You can point them at an API service of your choice, so they are not tied to one editor.
Add Chinese models
Qwen Code is an open-source terminal coding assistant and Kimi Code CLI is Moonshot AI's terminal coding agent. The same QCode cr_ key also reaches the GLM, Kimi, DeepSeek and Qwen families.
What one QCode key connects
The QCode docs tool pages cover Claude Code, OpenCode, Cline, Zed, Trae, Cursor, Qwen Code and Kimi Code CLI. Claude models only work on the Anthropic protocol, and Codex CLI serves GPT models only.
How to choose a Cursor alternative: three types, then whether you can bring your own key
As of 2026-11-05, a Cursor alternative is not one product but three routes. First, switch IDE: keep the graphical interface and file tree with Trae, Devin Desktop or VS Code with Cline. Second, switch to a terminal agent: let Claude Code, Codex CLI or OpenCode work on the command line while you keep the editor you know. Third, add Chinese models: use Qwen Code or Kimi Code CLI, or pick a GLM, Kimi, DeepSeek or Qwen model in a tool you already have. Cursor itself also accepts your own API key, so sometimes you only need to change the key, not the software. Decide with two questions: do you need a graphical interface, and does the tool have a field for a custom Base URL?
Latest versions and dates
Official pages captured on 2026-11-05 show: Cursor's download page lists 3.28 as the latest version; Trae's official changelog has 2026-10-15 as its newest entry, v3.6.1 to 3.6.4; VS Code 1.145 was released on 2026-11-04; the Cline VS Code extension is at 4.1.26 (2026-10-26); Claude Code 2.1.318 was published to npm on 2026-11-03; stable Codex CLI 0.166.0 was released on 2026-10-29; OpenCode 2.2.5 was released on 2026-10-30; Qwen Code 0.26.7 and Kimi Code CLI 2.5.0 were both released on 2026-11-04.
Timeline
Trae released v3.6.1 to 3.6.4, which its official changelog lists as a feature release.
Stable Codex CLI 0.166.0 was published on GitHub.
VS Code 1.145 was released; on the same day Qwen Code 0.26.7 and Kimi Code CLI 2.5.0 each shipped a new version.
What the vendors state and what they leave unsaid
Confirmed (verifiable word for word)
Trae's official docs say a custom configuration takes an API format, a request URL, a model ID and authentication information, and the API format is either OpenAI Chat Completions or Anthropic Messages. Cursor's help page says custom API keys only work with chat models and that Tab completion keeps using Cursor's built-in models. OpenCode's docs say you can set the baseURL option for any provider. Claude Code's docs say the terminal CLI, VS Code and JetBrains also support third-party providers.
Not stated officially
First, Devin Desktop: the QCode docs searched the official documentation index for BYOK, custom endpoint and Base URL keywords and found no field for an arbitrary Base URL, so the only route is hosting an agent over ACP, and the vendor does not promise that a hosted agent inherits your shell environment variables. Second, Cursor: its help page only gives the steps for pasting a key and does not name the Override Base URL fields; a Cursor staff member named them in an official forum reply on 2026-08-11. Third, Codex CLI: it speaks only the OpenAI protocol, and the QCode docs conclude it cannot call Claude models.
Another IDE or a terminal agent
A: Switch IDE
You keep the graphical interface and file tree, but know where your own key stops. Cursor's own key does not cover Tab completion. VS Code's BYOK covers chat only, and code completions still need a GitHub account. Trae's Auto option never calls custom models, so pick the model you added by hand.
B: Terminal agent plus API key
The agent runs apart from the editor. Claude Code and Codex CLI share one QCode key; the former uses the Anthropic endpoint and the latter the OpenAI Responses endpoint. Billing is per token, with per-model rates on /models. For OpenCode, see its setup page in the QCode docs (https://docs.qcode.cc/en/docs/ide/opencode).
Migrate in three steps
① Register at qcode.cc, create a key that starts with cr_ in the console, and top up on the recharge page. ② Pick a tool and fill in the endpoint: Claude models only work on the Anthropic protocol with Base URL https://api.qcode.cc/api; GPT models use the OpenAI Chat protocol with https://api.qcode.cc/openai/v1; Chinese models work on either protocol; for the Codex CLI Responses endpoint set base_url to https://api.qcode.cc/openai. Copy model IDs from /models character for character, and see the QCode docs tool page for each tool's exact fields. ③ Try one task in a small repository first, and put project rules in AGENTS.md, which the docs say Claude Code can now read directly.
Using it on QCode
Three steps: register and get a key that starts with cr_ in the console; top up on the recharge page with Alipay, WeChat Pay, a card, Apple Pay or Google Pay, which usually arrive within a minute; then enter the Base URL and key in your tool as the QCode docs tool page shows. Billing is per token, with per-model rates on /models, and the /models page captured on 2026-11-05 lists claude-sonnet-5-5, gpt-6.1-sol and glm-5.3. Not ready for a monthly plan? FAQ
Which Cursor alternative is most like Cursor?
In form, the closest are the IDEs: Trae, Devin Desktop (formerly Windsurf) and VS Code with Cline; Cline's own docs say it also installs in Cursor, Windsurf and JetBrains editors. If you care more about the agent than the editor, pick a terminal tool. Only trying them will show which one suits you, and the ones with a custom Base URL can share one QCode key.
Can I use Cursor alternatives in China?
On the QCode side, yes: the docs recommend asia.qcode.cc for mainland China and switching to api.qcode.cc if it is unstable, and you can top up with Alipay or WeChat Pay. Whether each tool can be downloaded and signed in to where you live depends on its own official page; Trae also has a mainland China edition, Trae CN (trae.com.cn).
Can Cursor use my own API key?
Yes. Cursor's help page says to paste the key under Settings > Models and click Save. On individual plans your model provider bills you directly for the model cost, but every request still goes through Cursor's servers for final prompt building, and Tab completion keeps using Cursor's built-in models. The QCode docs say Cursor's Override OpenAI Base URL and Override Anthropic Base URL can point at QCode.
Is Claude Code or Cursor better for a beginner?
It depends on whether you prefer a graphical interface or the command line; neither is ranked above the other. Claude Code's docs say it is available in the terminal, IDE, desktop app and browser, that most surfaces need a Claude subscription or an Anthropic Console account, and that the terminal CLI, VS Code and JetBrains also support third-party providers. The full side-by-side is on the Claude Code vs Cursor page on this site.
Does Trae cost money?
Check Trae's official page for its plans and prices. What can be confirmed is that its official docs let you add a custom model under Settings > Models with an API format, a request URL, a model ID and authentication information; on QCode, billing is per token with per-model rates on /models.
How do I migrate from Cursor to another tool?
Your code stays in your local repository, so nothing moves. To switch IDE, install the new editor: the QCode docs page on Trae says an extension missing from the TraeCode marketplace can be installed from the VS Code marketplace. To switch to a terminal agent, start it in the repository root and keep project rules in AGENTS.md. You do not have to uninstall Cursor; try the new tool on one small repository alongside it.
