Codex CLI on Windows: copy/paste with a Cyrillic layout (GitHub user report)

As of 2026-10-20 there are two user reports on GitHub. The first is about Codex CLI: on Windows, after switching to a Cyrillic keyboard layout, copy and paste in Codex CLI 0.162.1 no longer work as expected, in both Fullscreen TUI and regular Scrollback. The second is about the Codex desktop app, not the CLI: pressing the physical period key closes the whole window.

#Cyrillic layout#copy/paste regression#window closes (desktop app)#0.163.0 clipboard entry

What the reports say, what the changelog says, and the workaround one reporter tried

0.162.1

The Codex CLI version in the report

The copy/paste report names codex-cli 0.162.1, confirmed with codex --version. The system is written as Windows only, and the report says the exact Windows version and architecture were not verified yet.

Two modes

Fullscreen TUI and Scrollback

The report writes that the problem shows up in both display modes, so it is not limited to the new Fullscreen TUI. It also writes that behaviour with an English keyboard layout has not been verified, so the report does not claim that switching to English resolves it.

Status of both reports on 2026-10-20

The copy/paste report was submitted on 2026-10-12 and the window-closing one on 2026-09-15; on 2026-10-20 both are still open in the official repository, and the window-closing one has a single comment, written by the reporter, with no reply from the developers.

0.163.0

The Windows clipboard entry in changelog 0.163.0

The Windows clipboard entry in the official changelog is in 0.163.0 (2026-10-15). That entry covers clipboard shortcuts only; it mentions neither a Cyrillic keyboard layout nor a copy/paste regression.

What the reports actually describe

The two reports describe two different things. The first is about Codex CLI: with a Cyrillic keyboard layout active (the report names two layouts, one of them the Russian one) on Windows, copy and paste in Codex no longer work as expected, and the report calls this a change from the behaviour before the update; the reporter did not record the last working version. The second is about the Codex desktop app, not the CLI: on Windows 11 Home (build 26200, x64) its window closes when the physical period key is pressed; the same key types . on an English layout and ю on a Russian layout. Both reports were submitted by users to GitHub.

The related entry in the official changelog (2026-10-15)

The official Codex CLI changelog lists 0.163.0 (2026-10-15) with a fix stating that on Windows Ctrl+V and Shift+Insert paste text as well as images, with PR numbers #53224, #52967 and #53453. The same entry adds that on WSL repeated pastes reuse the clipboard reader and copy attempts time out instead of hanging.

Three points in time

2026-09-15

The window-closing report is submitted to the official repository: it is about the Codex desktop app, the environment is Windows 11 Home build 26200 x64 with the Codex desktop package OpenAI.Codex 26.908.9136.0, and the symptom is that one key closes the whole window.

2026-10-12

The copy/paste regression report is submitted: it names codex-cli 0.162.1, the problem shows up while a Cyrillic layout is active, and it is about Codex CLI.

2026-10-15

The official changelog ships 0.163.0, whose entry mentions pasting on Windows (Ctrl+V, Shift+Insert).

What the official sources state and what they leave open

Confirmed (word for word verifiable)

① There are two user reports in the official repository, one about copy and paste in Codex CLI, one about the window of the Codex desktop app closing; ② the copy/paste report writes the system as Windows only, without the exact Windows version and architecture; ③ the window-closing report names the desktop package OpenAI.Codex 26.908.9136.0; ④ the official changelog for 0.163.0 (2026-10-15) states that on Windows Ctrl+V and Shift+Insert paste text and images; ⑤ a user gives and tests a workaround in a comment on the issue: after removing the realtimeVoice Command+. global shortcut from the local keybinding file (keybindings.json), restarting and retesting, the period key no longer closes the window; ⑥ the copy/paste report has no comments yet.

What the official sources do not say

The official changelog does not mention a Cyrillic keyboard layout, does not say how the copy/paste regression will be handled, and no fixed version has been announced for the two reports. The reports are missing information too: the copy/paste one records neither the last working version, nor the terminal emulator, nor the exact shortcut combination, and behaviour with an English layout was not verified either; the window-closing one attaches no crash dump and the logs show no clear fatal exception. Whether switching to a different layout helps is not described anywhere by the official side. There is also a related report, #35599: the environment is Linux and macOS with a terminal that supports Kitty keyboard enhancement, and the symptom is that Ctrl+C and Ctrl+D are not recognised under a Cyrillic layout; it was submitted on 2026-07-27, is still open on 2026-10-20 and has two user comments. That is a different platform and a different symptom, not the same thing as the two Windows reports above.

Which of the two is it for you

The copy/paste regression

On the copy/paste side the report says only that copy and paste "no longer work as expected" under a Cyrillic layout; whether copying, pasting or the shortcut itself fails is not spelled out. The reporter also did not record the last working version, the terminal emulator or the shortcut combination. It shows up in both Fullscreen TUI and the regular Scrollback mode.

The window closing (desktop app)

The window of the Codex desktop app closes on its own and has to be opened again to carry on; first check whether your keybindings.json holds a realtimeVoice entry with Command+. (see below).

What you can do first

① Write down your environment: the Codex CLI version (check it with codex --version), the Windows version, the terminal emulator and the shortcut combinations you copy and paste with — the report is missing all of these. ② Work out which of the two phenomena you have: copy and paste in Codex CLI no longer working as expected is the copy/paste report, and the whole desktop window closing on the period key is the window-closing report. ③ Try the workaround from the comment: it covers the desktop window closing only — remove the realtimeVoice Command+. global shortcut from the local keybinding file (keybindings.json), restart Codex and test the same key; that is what the reporter says in the comment (written with the help of his AI assistant), there is no official explanation, and nobody has checked whether it helps with the copy/paste side. ④ For comparison you can also try an English layout: the report did not check that case, so nothing confirms the result. ⑤ Check the 0.163.0 entry (2026-10-15) in the official changelog: it does not say that updating solves the copy/paste regression, so do not treat an update as the fix. ⑥ Follow the status of both reports: on 2026-10-20 they are still open.

Running Codex with a QCode key

To use Codex with QCode, configure it the way the QCode documentation for Codex writes it: in the [model_providers.qcode] section of ~/.codex/config.toml set base_url = "https://api.qcode.cc/openai"; the key goes into ~/.codex/auth.json. On the QCode side billing is per token, and the per-model rates are listed on /models.

Frequently asked questions

Copy and paste do not work in Codex CLI on Windows with a Russian layout — is this a known problem?

There is a user report on GitHub (issue #53399, still open on 2026-10-20), but the official side has not confirmed it and there is no fixed version. The report says only that copy and paste "no longer work as expected"; it does not say whether copying, pasting or the shortcut itself is what fails.

Which versions and environments does the report name?

The copy/paste report names codex-cli 0.162.1, writes the system as Windows only, and leaves the exact Windows version, the architecture and the terminal emulator unverified. The window-closing report names Windows 11 Home build 26200 x64 and is about the Codex desktop app, not the CLI.

Is it fixed in Codex CLI 0.163.0?

The 0.163.0 changelog entry states that on Windows Ctrl+V and Shift+Insert paste text and images, but it mentions neither a Cyrillic keyboard layout nor this report, so you cannot say that updating helps.

Is there an official fix?

On 2026-10-20 both reports are still open in the official repository, and the official changelog has no matching fix entry, so there is no fixed version to point at yet.

The Codex window closes when I press the period key — what can I do?

There is one thing, and it covers the desktop window closing only: the reporter worked it out in the comment, removed the realtimeVoice Command+. global shortcut from the local keybinding file (keybindings.json), restarted Codex and the period key no longer closed the window. The analysis in that comment was written by the reporter's AI assistant, the cause is inferred from the source code and no crash dump backs it up; the comment author also writes that the problem is still there. There is no official explanation, and it was not checked against the copy/paste side.

How do I run Codex with a QCode key?

Write ~/.codex/config.toml and ~/.codex/auth.json as the QCode documentation for Codex says; on Windows both files are in %USERPROFILE%\.codex\. On the QCode side billing is per token, with the per-model rates listed on /models.
