Claude Max alternative: the three paths

As of 2026-11-04 there are three ways to move off Claude Max: step down to a lower official plan, run Claude Code on a metered API key instead, or mix the two by switching to metered billing once the plan quota is spent. The paths differ in who bills you and whether claude.ai account features come along, not in the model.

Updated 2026-11-04

Prices change: on QCode, Claude, GPT and Chinese models are billed per token — live rates on /models.

Four takeaways

$20 / $100 / $200

Official monthly prices

claude.com/pricing and the help centre captured 2026-11-04: Pro is $20 when billed monthly, Max $100 a month, Ultra $200 a month. Max gives five times Pro usage every five hours and every week; Ultra gives ten times Pro usage every week and verified Ultra accounts have no five-hour limit. The help centre also states that the Max 20x plan is now called Ultra.

per token

How a metered API bills

QCode bills the cr_ key per token and lists per-model rates on /models; the Claude models on /models on 2026-11-04 included claude-sonnet-5-5, claude-opus-5-5 and claude-haiku-5-5. A pay-as-you-go pack is one total quota for its validity window, used until empty rather than reset daily, and one key runs 5 requests at a time.

account features

What each option includes

A subscription carries the official apps and the claude.ai account features. With an API key the local Claude Code capabilities keep working — reading and writing files, Bash, MCP, Skills, Hooks, subagents — while cloud sessions, Remote Control and voice dictation, which need a claude.ai sign-in, do not; the feature-limits page lists them item by item.

two variables

Switching and mixing

Moving to metered use means swapping the credential: set ANTHROPIC_BASE_URL and ANTHROPIC_AUTH_TOKEN. Mixing has an official route too — paid plans can turn on usage credits and continue at consumption-based rates once you hit a limit. To flip between a plan sign-in and QCode, the docs point at CC Switch.

Where the three paths differ

Stepping down stays inside the official system: Max and Ultra differ in weekly volume and the five-hour limit, both are metered over windows, and web, desktop and Claude Code signed in with the plan share one allowance. Pointing Claude Code at a metered API key hands billing to the service that issued the key, and QCode lists its rates on /models. Mixing is Anthropic's own third route: after a plan limit is spent you can switch to usage credits at consumption-based rates. The monthly API credits bundled with Max and Ultra belong to your own Anthropic API account — the official wording is that they do not cover interactive Claude Code sessions, and QCode treats the two sides as never converting into each other.

What the two sets of docs say

Anthropic's help centre updated the Max plan, Ultra plan and usage credits articles on 2026-10-30; the usage credits page says most paid plans have a session limit that resets every five hours plus a weekly limit, and that instead of being blocked you can switch to consumption-based pricing. The QCode feature-availability table was updated 2026-11-03, with same-day test records for CLAUDE.md, Hooks, image input and prompt caching.

Timeline

2026-09-10

The usage credits article states that from 2026-09-10, in jurisdictions such as Japan, usage credits expire six months after purchase, with an email seven days before expiry.

2026-10-30

The help centre pages for Max, Ultra and monthly API credits were updated the same day; they state that the bundled credits do not cover interactive Claude Code sessions and don't roll over.

Confirmed vs common misconceptions

Confirmed (verifiable word for word)

Official: paid plans are metered in windows — Max gives five times Pro usage every five hours and every week, Ultra ten times every week with no five-hour limit for verified accounts; paid plans have session and weekly limits and can enable usage credits; the bundled API credits neither cover interactive Claude Code nor roll over. QCode docs: a pay-as-you-go pack is one total quota that is not reset daily, one key runs 5 concurrent requests, an exhausted quota returns 402 and an expired pack returns 401.

Common misconceptions

First, “metered APIs have no weekly limit”: Anthropic's own API limits follow the usage tier and carry a monthly spend cap, and requests pause with an HTTP 429 once it is reached; on QCode nothing resets by day, but one key runs 5 requests at a time, an exhausted quota returns 402 and an expired pack returns 401. Second, “an API key unlocks everything Max has”: the official docs list the claude.ai sign-in group as unreachable from a third-party credential. Third, “the API credits in Max can run Claude Code”: Anthropic says those credits are for building apps on the Claude Platform and do not cover interactive Claude Code sessions or extra usage after a limit. Fourth, “once the plan quota is gone you can only wait”: the official route is enabling usage credits and continuing at consumption-based rates.

Keep the subscription or switch to metered

Stay on the official plan

Better if you move between the official apps and the terminal every day and you use claude.ai account features — Projects, memory, cloud sessions. What decides it is whether the five-hour window and the weekly limit get in your way, and whether you are willing to turn on usage credits when you hit them.

Switch to a metered API key

Better if your usage comes in bursts, you do not want a monthly commitment, and you mostly write code in Claude Code and Codex: QCode bills per token with rates on /models. The only honest test is arithmetic — multiply your own monthly usage by the rates on /models and compare the result with a monthly plan price. Neither QCode nor Anthropic publishes a comparable saving figure, so there is no ready-made answer to lean on.

Switching from a plan to metered

① Register at qcode.cc and create the cr_ key in the console. ② Pay on the top-up page — Alipay, WeChat Pay, cards and cryptocurrency are all listed — and activation is immediate and self-service. ③ Swap the credential: set ANTHROPIC_BASE_URL and ANTHROPIC_AUTH_TOKEN to QCode in Claude Code, send one message and check /status to confirm the gateway credential is the active one. Official docs warn that a leftover ANTHROPIC_API_KEY overrides the plan sign-in and bills API usage. CC Switch is the faster way to go back and forth.

Switch to metered on QCode

Three steps: register and create the cr_ key, top up, then point ANTHROPIC_BASE_URL at https://api.qcode.cc/api and put the key in ANTHROPIC_AUTH_TOKEN. Billing is per token, with per-model rates on /models. Not ready for a monthly plan? Pay-as-you-go Packs start at $4 for a one-time quota you use within 7 days; if you already have a Personal Plan, add a booster pack when you need more quota.

FAQ

Which is a better deal, Claude Max or a metered API?

It depends on the shape of your usage, not on a sticker price: Max is a $100 monthly plan metered over a five-hour window and weekly limits, while a metered API charges per request. No published figure puts the two on the same scale, and QCode rates are only on /models. Daily heavy use is covered better by a plan; bursty use, or not wanting a monthly commitment, suits metered.

If my plan quota runs out, can I switch to the API temporarily?

Yes, and there are two different routes. Anthropic's own is turning on usage credits inside a paid plan, which switches you to consumption-based pricing instead of blocking you. The other is pointing Claude Code at your own API credential — on QCode that is ANTHROPIC_BASE_URL plus a cr_ key. Note that the monthly API credits bundled with Max and Ultra do not cover interactive Claude Code sessions.

Does a metered API have concurrency or rate limits?

Yes. QCode docs state the packs run at concurrency 5 — one key handles 5 requests at a time — that an exhausted quota returns 402 and an expired pack returns 401. Anthropic's API sets limits by usage tier with a monthly spend cap, and requests pause with an HTTP 429 once the cap is reached.

How do I pay, and how fast does the balance arrive?

Alipay, WeChat Pay, cards, Apple Pay and Google Pay usually arrive within a minute; SBP and Russian cards can take a few minutes; crypto is checked by hand and credited within one day.

Can Codex or Cursor use the same key?

Yes: the docs say one cr_ key serves Claude Code, Codex CLI and a long list of IDE, CLI and desktop clients, with Codex and Claude Code sharing the same QCode API key, and Cursor configured with a custom Base URL plus API key. To reach Claude, pick a client that speaks the Anthropic protocol — OpenAI-compatible endpoints do not serve Claude models, and the Responses endpoint Codex uses does not either.

How do I estimate my own monthly usage?

Describe the shape first: continuous daily work or bursts. Then do the arithmetic yourself — multiply your monthly usage by the rates on /models and compare it with a monthly plan price; on the plan side, check whether the five-hour window and weekly limits would block you. Neither QCode nor Anthropic publishes a “metered saves X” figure, so any such claim has to be your own calculation.
